Condensed Laws of Soccer – U-12 Division

Unless otherwise noted Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) laws apply.

LAW I ‑          The Field of Play. Full sized fields and goals will be used.  Goal nets will be used if available.  Positive coaching will be conducted along the touch line within 10 yards of the halfway line.

LAW III ‑       Number of Players. Each team consists of 11 players (max.) to 7 players (min.) on the field,

one of whom must be the goalkeeper. Each player should play 3/4 of each game and must play

at least 1/2 of each game (see Regional Guidelines).  Substitutions can be made through out the game when the ball is out of play and the referee has acknowledged the substitution request.

LAW V ‑          Referees. AYSO certified referees, if available, will be used in lieu of "team referees".  If not available, each team should designate a "team referee" to officiate for 1/2 of the game.

Coaches may serve as the "team referee".

LAW VI ‑        Linespersons. Each team will be requested to supply a linesperson. They will assist the referee

by indicating when the ball is out of play and which team is entitled to possession on the restart.   Referees may assign other duties as necessary.

LAW VII-       Duration of Play.  The game consists of two-thirty minute periods with a 5-10 minute half time break.

LAW XI ‑        Offside. In U-12, the offside rule WILL BE enforced. Referees are reminded that a

player in an off‑side position must participate in the play for an off‑side infraction to occur.

Generally participation means the player actually receives a pass or moves to play the ball from

                         the off‑side position.

LAW XII ‑      Fouls and Misconduct. The referee should explain infractions to the offending player. Fair Play and Good Sportsmanship is emphasized for players, coaches, and spectators at all times.  Players may be Cautioned (yellow card) or Sent Off (red card) by the referee for appropriate offenses.  In the case of a red card, the player will not be allowed to play the remainder of the game and all of the next scheduled game (See Regional Guidelines).  All red cards shall be reported to the Regional Commissioner and Regional Referee Administrator.

LAW XIV ‑     Penalty Kicks. Penalty kicks will be awarded in the match.
